How do I clean my aquarium?

Answered By Editor

When your aquarium has noticeable moss around it and emits an unpleasant smell, you know it is time to clean your aquarium. Cleaning an aquarium is really not difficult. In fact, you don't even have to remove the fish.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Gather your materials for cleaning. You will need 1) a siphon and gravel vaccum, 2) a clean bucket or bowl, 3) an algae scraper, and 4) prepared water to replace what you remove.

You don't want to use any cleaners or anything that has cleaning solutions or soap residues. These will hurt the fish. Prepare replacement chlorine-free water (about 20% of water in aquarium) to room temperature. If you are using saltwater fish, prepare the appropriate ratio of salt to water.

Unplug the fish tank's filters and electrical components. Then, use an algae scraper to clean off the inside of the glass of the aquarium. Do not use any cleaning solutions.

Remove up to 20% of the water from the aquarium using a siphon and put it into a bucket or bowl. Be careful not to disturb the fish or rocks at the bottom of the tank. Next, hover over the rocks at the bottom of the aquarium with a gravel vacuum and siphon up any unwanted material. Either use your algae scraper to clean plants and fish tank decor, or remove them and clean them outside of the tank. Again, do not use soap or any other cleaner.

Once everything is clean, pour the previously prepared water into the tank to replace the amount you removed. Then, plug everything back in and enjoy watching your fish in their clean tank.
